In Barcelona, digital nomads face hostility from locals armed with water pistols, but other parts of Spain embrace remote workers. Extremadura’s local government is offering up to €15k to digital nomads willing to move to the rural region. This grant covers housing, land, and other essentials.
Located near Portugal, Extremadura is known for its scenic landscapes, affordable living, and strong internet connectivity. However, to qualify for the grant, you must commit to living there for at least two years—a challenge for some nomads. The region can also get extremely hot in the summer and may lack excitement.
The program has a €2 million budget, supporting around 200 nomads. Those under 30 or moving to villages with fewer than 5,000 people can receive €10,000, while others get €8,000. The grants are available to all nationalities eligible to live and work in Spain, with EU nationals having an easier process. Non-EU citizens can apply for Spain’s digital nomad visa.
Applications open in September and will be accepted until the €2 million is allocated. To apply, you’ll need a digital certificate or electronic Spanish ID and proof of remote income. You must not have lived in Extremadura in the last six months. Successful applicants will be notified within three months.
